CBI Health: Migrating 100+ Servers and 70TB of Data to AWS in 100 Days
The client’s data was on-premises, and they were searching for a solution that would lower maintenance costs and allow them access to a more modern infrastructure.

Challenge
Our client, CBI Health, was using an on-premises VMware infrastructure to house their critical data. They were struggling with high maintenance costs and required dedicated monitoring and management resources, diverting attention away from their core mission.
They were looking to explore more modern cloud alternatives, to enable a data-driven approach, and make their operational processes more resilient.
Working with a tight timeline and recognizing the limitations of their expertise in navigating the complexities of the cloud, CBI Health was seeking an experienced partner to guide the transition.
Solution
CBI Health chose Adastra, Canada's first Experienced-Based Acceleration (EBA)-certified partner,  for our AWS expertise, and strong experience with cloud migrations.Â
As part of the EBA program, we assembled a team, bringing together a CIO, project manager, and application, security and migration specialists. The EBA team worked backwards from the desired end state to define the right skills, architecture, and training, remove blockers, and keep stakeholders aligned. Â
Once the future-state design was agreed, Adastra executed a lift‑and‑shift migration, moving applications in planned waves and ultimately migrating more than 100 servers in just two EBA sessions. This approach prioritized speed and stability, reduced risk and cost, avoided end‑user retraining, and minimized operational disruption. We helped CBI Health set up a governed cloud environment and connect it to their existing data center. We thenLastly, we provided knowledge transfer and training on the AWS services implemented, to ensure the client can successfully use the system on their own.Â

Impact
Through the EBA process and the team’s ability to identify and resolve issues quickly, the migration finished 20% ahead of schedule and delivered practical insights to improve CBI Health’s internal processes or future modernization. Instead of spreading each migration wave over several weeks, the team executed core cutovers in focused, single-day EBA sprint sessions, resolving blockers in real time.
The collaboration delivered meaningful outcomes for both Adastra and CBI Health:
- Migration of more than 100 servers in roughly 100 days
- Transfer of over 70TB of data to the AWS Cloud
- Approximately 20% cost savings on compute and storage
- Stronger security posture through cloud-native services
- Improved scalability and reliability of critical systems
- Better access to AWS’s innovation ecosystem and expertise
- A solid foundation for future modernization, including AI/ML workloads
