Publicly Traded Construction Client Drives Operational Insights with a Centralized Data Platform on Azure Synapse

Manufacturing Company Sought Enhanced Operational Insights

The client, a leader in the Canadian construction services industry, sought to enhance their operational capabilities through a centralized data platform. Their goal was to consolidate data from various sources, including third party vendors, subcontractors, and siloed internal systems spread across legacy systems, on-premises systems, and cloud platforms. The main challenge was integrating these varied data streams to gain a comprehensive view of the company’s operational performance. Prior to this initiative, the client lacked an integrated cloud-based solution, which we subsequently developed to address these needs.

Together, Microsoft and Adastra embarked on a journey to identify innovative solutions tailored to the construction industry. Throughout this collaborative process, the client received multiple strategic options, each reflecting a deep understanding of their specific challenges and opportunities.

Addressing Data Platform Implementation Challenges

The client approached Adastra, confident in our reputation as a global leader in data solutions and supported by Microsoft's strong endorsement of our adaptability and deep hands-on experience.

Throughout the solution implementation, additional needs emerged: specifically, the expansion of key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics beyond the initial scope identified during the planning phase. These challenges became evident during testing, prompting a refined approach that ensured both immediate responsiveness and future scalability. Our team integrated these expanded KPIs and delivered a comprehensive and scalable data platform to the client.

The solution modernized the client's data platform by automating data ingestion into a data lake and building a sophisticated data warehouse on Azure Synapse [Figure 1]. This new infrastructure enables seamless Power BI reporting, bolstered by Azure Synapse, Azure Data Factor, and a custom Power BI Center of Excellence. This collaborative journey not only resolved the client's immediate data needs but also equipped them with a future-ready data platform to support their growth and evolving objectives.
