$1.2m in Potential Savings with Cloud Cost Optimization

Our client needed help setting up new systems to allow resources to perform at their maximum capacity. At the time of consulting Adastra’s services, they had no cost measurements or planning in place of any sort. They needed to perform an analysis of their current architecture, and were seeking recommendations on how to optimize their current Azure investments to better manage their budget.

About the Client

Our client is a large Canadian loyalty program provider. Members of the rewards program can collect points and redeem them for various rewards such as entertainment, movies, travel, shopping, dining, and banking.

Solution

Adastra effectively utilized Azure Services to generate recommended improvements across many divisions, including app services, log analytics, storage, and more.

Challenge Story

In 2022, Adastra collaborated with our client to optimize and provide an internal understanding of their loyalty platform on Microsoft architecture. They wanted an analysis of their current architecture and recommendations for optimizations on Azure investments, to achieve monthly Azure costs and economics of scale for Azure Services.

The client was currently on the Azure Cloud and wanted a way to curb cloud spending. They had no budget and no cost alerts; their initial costs were not properly estimated; and their resources were not properly tagged. They also lacked cost measurements or cost planning. Their storage costs were also growing exponentially each month.

Additionally, they wanted more and better access to their data and visibility into their cloud spending. This would allow long-term optimization of their budget, time, and other resources.

Solution Story

Adastra began working with the client through a Microsoft introduction. We worked to build a strategic relationship through various workshops and educational sessions, and they were impressed with our experience, credibility, professionalism and detail orientation.

Discovery Sessions

Adastra performed five discovery sessions that covered the current state of:

  • Enterprise architecture
  • Network architecture
  • Microsoft architecture, services and governance
  • Application and analytics functional and non-functional design
  • Application and analytics pricing

These discovery sessions gave us a better understanding of the client’s current services and programs so we could provide optimized, organization-specific solutions.

Cost Assessment and Recommendations

During the cost assessment phase of the project, Adastra maintained a priority approach. The main goals of this phase were:

  • Prioritize cost remediation by Azure service
  • Evaluate and define cost optimization options for current Azure architecture
  • Define alternative Azure service architecture options

At the end of the cost assessment phase, Adastra provided the client with a Cost Optimization Options Report. The report summarized current and future optimizations, as well as Azure Advisor Recommendations.

The next goals were for Adastra to identify recommendations and provide a roadmap for migration to the chosen approach. To fulfill this, Adastra created a Recommendation and Roadmap Report. The report included Adastra’s recommendations for storage, Cosmos DB, compute, app services/functions, API management, and more.

Benefits Story

Adastra’s solution has set the client up to implement Azure services to revise their cost management strategy, provide visibility into their data and cloud spending, and overall allow them to optimize their resources. Adastra and Microsoft Azure helped the client achieve the following results:

  • A better understanding of their platform and cost details
    • Insights into how the system was built, lack of governance, spending etc.
  • $1.2 million/year saved with Adastra proposed recommendations to cost optimization
    • Proposed changes to architecture, enable platform/solution governance
  • Reduced server maintenance investment

In the future, the client wants to continue using Azure to optimize data storage and organization.
