On International Women’s Day, let’s pause to acknowledge and support the incredible women who are contributing and supporting important growth in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Fostering Inclusivity in STEM

International Women’s Day serves as a powerful reminder of the gender gap in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). There needs to be increased opportunities for women at all levels within organizations and environments need to be carefully created to actively cultivate the unique perspectives and talents of women.

As we celebrate the achievements of women in STEM, we also recognize the challenges they face. The journey to a more inclusive and diverse industry is ongoing, and it requires collective effort.

Katya Dunets

Katya Dunets – AWS Sales Engineer, Canada

Katya Dunets emphasized the importance of embracing change in the dynamic STEM landscape. She encouraged professionals to seize opportunities for growth, even when faced with discomfort. Katya advocates for unbiased connections within the STEM community, supporting mentorship programs to foster meaningful relationships. She also highlighted the significance of representation in leadership to inspire diverse perspectives and future generations.

Julia Kostova – Data Integration Consultant, Bulgaria

Julia Kostova finds gratification in mentoring and fostering collaboration in her role. She encourages team members to leverage their strengths for innovation and emphasizes the power of determination in overcoming challenges. Julia advocates for continuous learning, adaptability and seeking mentorship as crucial elements for success. In supporting women’s advancement, she identified confidence, collaboration and leadership as key traits, which underscored the importance of mentorship, equal opportunities and flexible work arrangements for an inclusive 2024 STEM community.

Magdaléna Landsmeer, Senior Sales Director, Slovakia

Magdaléna Landsmeer stressed the importance of showcasing contributions in STEM through teamwork. She advocates for balance, active listening and organic mentorship, believing Adastra’s commitment to equal opportunities is crucial for fostering an inclusive work environment in 2024 and beyond.

Loan Ly – AWS Alliance, Global

Loan Ly emphasized the dynamic nature of STEM roles, urging professionals to evolve with the market. She stresses the importance of understanding and articulating the value one brings to the organization. Additionally, she advocates for owning one’s worth and successes, highlighting the significance of self-promotion.

Anne Maringer – Account Manager/ Business Development Manager, Germany

Anne Maringer challenged the gender-focused discussions in STEM, advocating for transparency based on merit. She encourages a mindset shift that transcends gender differentiation and emphasizes the importance of seeing the big picture and asking uncomfortable yet crucial questions.

Hemanta Poudyal – COE Lead Data Management Practice, Canada

Hemanta Poudyal stressed the need for explicit communication of achievements to gain recognition in the evolving STEM field. She advised prioritizing continuous learning through training and certifications while developing strong interpersonal and time management skills. In supporting women’s advancement, Hemanta acknowledged the ongoing diversity initiatives in the STEM community, she urges active engagement from everyone as an important factor for sustained positive outcomes.

Justine Telan – COE Lead Microsoft Practice, Canada

Justine Telan underscored the importance of connecting on a personal level with peers, fostering relationships beyond work-related discussions and actively engaging in meaningful conversations.

Nurturing Talent and Collaboration

The discussions with these accomplished women highlight the need for a cultural shift in STEM. It is important to not only recognize women in STEM on International Women’s Day but to make sustained commitments that support change. The following recommendations could help make STEM careers more accessible for women and create positive change:

  • Early Education: Start at the elementary level, encourage young girls to pursue their interests in science and math. Remove social barriers and provide toys that promote science and engineering.
  • Mentorship: Actively recognize, promote and support those who have succeeded. Build networks for women at different career stages, promoting all aspects of STEM, including innovation and business development.
  • Inclusive Language: Encourage recognizing great work regardless of gender.
  • Ownership: Encourage professionals, especially women, to own their worth and successes.
  • Collaboration: Actively identify situations for inclusivity, recognize and promote the work of individuals and ensure that quiet contributors are acknowledged.

On International Women’s Day let’s look forward and collectively work towards a future where gender diversity is not just acknowledged but celebrated.
