Challenge
Performance Limits and Fragmented Data in Excels
Eurowag, a leading provider of digital payment and mobility solutions for commercial road transport, was hitting the typical limitations of a traditional business intelligence (BI) architecture — outdated OLAP, dependency on Excel, and limited scalability:
- A 400GB OLAP multidimensional cube
- Power BI reports hosted on-premise
- Heavy reliance on Excel for pivot analysis
- Complex optimization of large, detailed datasets
- Manual reporting management without central governance
The company needed fast access to detailed data, flexible reporting, and an environment capable of coping with peak loads. Partnering with Adastra, Eurowag chose to migrate its analytics environment — from on-premise Power BI reporting published via Reporting Server and OLAP through Microsoft Analysis Services — into Microsoft Fabric.
The key objectives were:
- Expanding self-service capabilities for both existing and new Power BI users
- Migrating large OLAP cubes with detailed data while minimizing the effort required for storage mode optimization
- Laying the foundation for a full migration of the data platform into Microsoft Fabric — a forward-looking technology whose capabilities continue to evolve
Solution
Migration to Microsoft Fabric and Governed Self-Service BI
A key requirement was to create an environment that is powerful, scalable, and equipped with modern tools that make it easier for business users to work in self-service mode. Eurowag migrated from on-premise reporting to Microsoft Fabric, adopting a tailored architecture that combines Azure Synapse with the capabilities of Microsoft Fabric. The Fabric-based solution connects a robust data platform with modern reporting tools, enabling:
- The extension of Azure Synapse with Microsoft Fabric
- Data replication from the legacy system via a metadata-driven pipeline
- The creation of certified semantic models for different teams to standardize content
- Use of both Direct Lake and Direct Query modes
- Implementation of governance rules and user training
- Seamless performance scaling — for example, increasing capacity from F64 to F128 SKUs during morning peaks
“When there’s a sales meeting, we know the next day everyone will be checking Power BI. At that point, we simply double the capacity in the morning — and scale it back down in the afternoon.”
— Marta Oplatková, Head of Data Analytics, Eurowag

With its new architecture, Eurowag has realized a number of concrete benefits that simplify reporting across the organization — from an environment that supports the dynamic growth of self-service analytics to flexible performance scaling during peak demand. Reporting now leverages advanced visualizations and faster data refresh. Additionally, Thanks to the built-in scalability, Eurowag can raise capacity limits while maintaining performance — without the need for extensive optimization.
Impact
Faster Reporting, Stable Operations, and Reduced Dependence on Excel
The move to Microsoft Fabric gave Eurowag not only higher performance, but also greater control over who creates content and under what conditions. The BI system now reliably supports internal operations, including peak loads, while users have access to up-to-date data with far less reliance on manual Excel processes.
- Eurowag has grown from 150 original reports to more than 500 in the Power BI Service
- Reporting is available to over 500 users
- Reports are produced much faster, as users can create and publish them independently
- Capacity can be scaled at specific times — even several times a day
- Dependence on Excel has been significantly reduced, while the quality of outputs has improved
- Governance ensures oversight without restricting self-service
Today, Eurowag runs its entire BI and reporting platform in the cloud — powerful, scalable, and fully aligned with business needs.
