Sybase Announces The End of Maintenance by 2025

In 2018, SAP Adaptive Server Enterprise (ASE), also known as Sybase, announced the end of mainstream maintenance (EoMM) by 2025. While the platform has been maintained thus far, SAP has decided to refocus investments away from Sybase. Remaining customer must now weigh in the options to either migrate or maintain their existing platform, while enduring a rapidly decreasing return on investment.

The EoMM presents the opportunity for organizations to migrate to the cloud. Some of the benefits you can expect to see include:

Resolve Current State Challenges

Seamless, end to end solution | Near-zero downtime | Resilient | Migrate at-scale from multiple sources

Adastra’s migration and conversion efforts focus on reducing the number of systems that are used across the organization. Adastra built a highly automated data migration solution to move everything to the new systems in one go. Before the migration, the data needed to be well-prepared, and all issues pertaining to data quality and migration had to be addressed and automated in advance, so that as soon as the migration was complete, the client’s employees could move to the new systems.

The data movement process includes the extraction of data from source systems and data transformation and restructuring to prepare it in a format that was ready to load into the target system. To define what kind of data is needed for the new systems, it was important to first understand where that data resided in the existing systems. This required detailed data analysis and profiling to identify data domains and data elements in the existing systems. Next, the data is mapped to the new systems, keeping in mind that the source and target systems often had data structured differently, with a different set of attributes and fields. In some cases, a single attribute in the old system populated multiple attributes in the new system or vice versa, and planning and analysis for data migration had to be done accordingly. For instance, in the case of the address attribute, it may have to be split into different components (street name, suite number, city, pin code, etc.)

The migration to on-premise SQL Server will also serve as a conservative step towards the move to the cloud in the future. The data migration will make it easier and faster for an organization to migrate to the cloud by simply porting their SQL Server instance across to Synapse or SQL Server Managed instance.
